How to be a good mentor

walk tall

Character is the real foundation of all worthwhile success. A good question to ask yourself is, "What kind of advice do I give others that I need to follow myself?" Living a double life will get you nowhere twice as fast. "Thoughts lead on to purposes; purposes go forth in action; actions form habits; habits decide character; and character fixes our destiny'" said Tryon Edwards. Proverbs asserts, " A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches."
Would your reputation recognize your character if they met in the dark? Desire what Psalms declared, " Create in me a pure heart, OH LORD, and renew in me a right spirit."
Consider this "If you think about what you ought to do for people, your character will take care of itself."
Big game

Go farther than you can see. Don't just look at the present. Think unthinkable thoughts, see where no one is looking and take action before it's obvious.
God made the world round so that we would never be able to see too far down the road. Significant achievements have never been obtained by taking small risks on unimportant issues. If you're hunting rabbits in tiger country, you must keep your eye peeled for tigers, but when you are hunting tigers you can ignore the rabbits.
You have reached stagnation when all you ener exercise is caution. Too many people expect little, ask for little, receive little and are content with little. Having a dream is not trying to believe something regardless of the evidence; dreaming is daring to do something regardless of the consequences. Let your faith run ahead of your mind.

Go with the flow

The secret to living is giving. One way to judge a person is by what they say. A better way is by what they do. The best way is by what they give. Ask yourself this question; "do I fell for other in my wallet" It is more blessed to give than to receive. Giving is always the thermometer of our love for others. "When you cease to make a contribution, you begin to die. " If you have, give. If you lack, give.
Selfishness always ends in self-destruction. John Ruskin said, "When a man is wrapped up in himself, he makes a pretty small package. There is no happiness in having or in getting, but only in giving. The best of generosity is not necessarily how much you give but how much you have left.

How to be good mentor

Here are some steps to be a good mentor
Step 1
Teach by example.

A mentor's focus should be to help a less experienced person acquire the knowledge and character needed to meet his or her goal. They provide opportunities for growth and new experiences.
Step 2
Counsel the mentee wisely.

Provide the benefit of your knowledge and experience keeping in mind that because of unique personalities every situation is different. However, an explanation of how you handled certain situations can get the mentee thinking about how to solve their own problems.
Step 3
Offer encouragement.

Most people become stagnant out of fear. Fear of failure, fear of success and fear of something different. The mentor will need to encourage the mentee and help them over self-doubt.
Step 4

Encourage professional behavior and confront negative behavior.

Teach the mentee how to dress and act professionally. Teach him or her social graces and proper etiquette. When the mentee performs poorly or act badly, call them on it - in private. But as a mentor, you must let them know when certain actions are unacceptable.
Step 5

Challenge the mentee.
To encourage growth, you must challenge the mentee. Give them opportunities that they would not normally have at their level. Be with them throughout the project to make sure it is going well. At the end, publicly acknowledge their contribution, if appropriate.
